What Does the Content Development Process Look Like

Hi! My name is Jessica Benton, and I am a content creator here at Creative 7 Designs. I’ve been here for about a year and a half in that time I have written millions of words and learned more than I care to share about life insurance, plumbing, medical malpractice and countless other topics. But for this blog, I wanted to tell you a little bit more about my processes when I’m writing a website, a marketing piece or a social media post.

My process is collaborative.

When we get a new client, I love to meet with them face to face or through a phone call. It’s in those meetings that I get a feel for who they are, what they do, and why they do it. This is usually my first foray into their particular type of business, so I always like to have them explain their business as if they are telling it to a 5th grader. I ask a bunch of questions and try to learn as much as I possibly can during our time together, so I have a firm foundation for when I start writing.

My next steps are research, research, and more research.

I’m a natural voracious reader, so I tear through my reading trying to find pieces to help me better understand their business. I like to find some interesting topics that I can write about later. I want to see what their competition is putting out and how they market themselves. I will look up and read about similar businesses that are on the other side of the country. I put myself in their customer’s shoes and try to come up with questions that they would have and then answer those questions.

My final steps are the actual writing.
Probably not very exciting. You’ve probably seen me with my big blue headphones on writing away if you’ve ever come in our offices. I found that I write better with music on, also it drowns out my boss’ extremely loud phone calls (looking at you Joe). I can’t listen to anything with lyrics otherwise I start writing what I’m hearing, but a blend of atmospheric rock and classical music seems to do the trick.

I never expect that my first draft is writing gold. So I edit and pare down as best I can. I’m a wordy writer. I’ve got a lot of thoughts, and I got a lot to say! But that’s not always our best approach. Next, I send my draft to the client and work alongside them to finish their content. I want our clients to enjoy their content, so we work together to get the tone and wording just right. After a while, we find the balance needed and for a lot of our monthly clients, we will email with some ideas so I have some launching points. Each client is different, but my process stays the same. Hope you enjoyed reading our blog! Make sure to check out our next blog from Joseph our Head Honcho!
