Good Boss Bad Boss

October 16th is Boss’s Day. And no, I’m not talking about Bruce Springsteen; though I would happily write a whole blog on him (hint hint). I’m talking about the common position found at every job. The Boss. A boss has a lot of power over how you view your job which is where most people spend the majority of their days. Meaning that a good boss or a bad boss has the opportunity to make a significant impact on your life.

I think we all have had a few experiences with a bad boss. But the first thing that comes to my mind is Michael Scott from The Office.

“Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy – both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.”

The beauty of Michael Scott was that even though he was a TERRIBLE boss, you loved him as a person. But let’s look at what makes a good boss.

Leadership

Not all bosses are leaders. Leaders inspire people instead of setting deadlines and demanding results. A leader is a visionary that shares where they would like to see things grow to and then helps everyone reach that goal. A leader builds trust so that everyone working with them knows that there are open communication lines and mutual appreciation.

Respect

A good boss earns respect and gives it in return to their employees. Many people have experienced the belittling effect that a bad boss can inflict. But a good boss values the people that they surround themselves with and fosters good community.

Fun

Having fun at work is important! Not that it should overshadow the whole day, but it has a place in the office! Having fun and laughing changes the entire atmosphere of the workplace and a boss has the opportunity to set the example for what is appropriate or to create an environment of fear.

I have to say that one of the best bosses I’ve ever had is Joseph Kibler at C7D. From day one he has trusted me, valued my contribution, been open to feedback, been quick to give praise and is always down for a coffee or burrito run (often paying for us too!). So thanks Joe for being a great boss – we sure do love ya!!

Here’s to all the bosses! Have a wonderful Boss’s Day!!
